library
The Sarvodaya Library is a constant work in progress. We keep adding new books and articles and develop it further both in regard to its content as well as in regard to its presentation. The books that we upload here, to the best of our knowledge, are meant to be freely published and distributed by the authors or the respective organisations responsible for these works, to serve our common cause of a non-violent society; therefore they are free from copyright restrictions. While some of these works may have been published by particular publishers in the past, they as well have been published in newspapers and other freely available sources by the authors themselves, in order to promote their thought to the best of their ability at the time; the digital age has given us another medium. Some of the books are long out of print and made available here again. If in spite of this we have made a mistake and you should find anything that should not be made publicly available, please contact us and we will remove it.
Introduction
- Strands of a Vision / DE: Fragmente einer Vision (by Vinoba)
sarvodaya
On the social philosophy and the vision of a non-violent social order, that we call Sarvodaya and the non-violent revolution that is constantly trying to realise it. The books in this category are either directly dealing with Sarvodaya or have inspired it.
Pre-Sarvodaya
- Unto This Last (Essays by John Ruskin from 1860 that deeply influenced Gandhi and inspired his idea of Sarvodaya).
- The Kingdom of God is Within You (a christian anarchist treatise by Leo Tolstoj and the culmination of his philosophal thought, first published in Germany in 1894 after being banned in Russia; without its influence Gandhi wouldn’t have done what he did, as it profoundly deepened his conviction in non-violence; consequentially the second Ashram founded by Gandhi (after the “Phoenix Farm”) was called “Tolstoi Farm”.)

satyagraha
Satyagraha (insistence on truth) is the means to the end of a non-violent society, the non-resistance against Evil and assistance for the Good, the destruction of the logic of violence through love. The books and articles contained either deal with Satyagraha directly or are older sources that have preached the same or aspects of it, before the term itself was coined in the 20th century.

samanvaya
Samanvaya is a synthetical approach to thought, of seeking the higher truth and the common ground in the unity of life as an equal basis for action. When Satyagraha is overcoming conflict in action, Samanvaya is overcoming ideological conflicts in thought.

samyayoga
The metaphysical basis of Sarvodaya and a philosophy of life that upholds a true essence underlying all religion and any true spirituality. It has also been described by Vinoba as Vedanta, but not in the common and Indian sense of the term, as the End and Essence of the Vedas, but as the Essence of all sacred Scripture, of all true teachings of the “unity of life”, be it expressed in the Buddha Dhamma, in Christianity, in Islam or as well in any nominal “atheist” metaphysics, insofar as it expresses the same truth, which can just as well be done in non-religious terms. The insistence is on truth alone.
